Services

It is important to contact our clinic as soon as possible, as we perform abortions from 5 to 15 weeks L.M.P. Some procedures must be performed at 8 weeks or less. Take this into consideration when determining a pregnancy termination. NHC offers two different types of procedures, which are:
  • Medical
  • Surgical

Medical Abortion

This procedure is one that some women choose, you must be less than 8 weeks pregnant. You can take control in the privacy of your own home. You will need to bring in a first morning urine sample the day we start the procedure.

How is a Medical abortion performed?

This procedure requires 2 or 3 trips to the office and two medications: Mifeprex (Ru 486) and Misoprostol. You will be given the Mifeprex (Ru 486) by our physician and, you will then be given 4 tablets of the Misoprostol to be taken at home and inserted vaginally.

How do the medications work?

  • Mifeprex (Ru 486) – This is a drug that blocks the progesterone that is needed for the pregnancy to continue.
  • Misoprostol – This medication will cause your uterus to contract, and expel the uterine contents. A miscarriage will generally happen within 24 hours. Most experience the miscarriage within the first 4 hours.

What will happen if there is a problem with the procedure?

This abortion procedure is 95% effective; however, there is a 5% failure rate.  This is generally caused by bleeding or an incomplete procedure. If this does happen, you will need a surgical procedure. You will have to be prepared for a surgical procedure if there is a failure with this method, there is no extra charge.

Surgical Abortions

We offer:

  • Vacuum Aspiration – This procedure can be done in the 6th to 15th week. The doctor will numb your cervix, and you will be given a medication for relaxation and cramping. The doctor will allow time for the medication to work. Once the medication has taken effect, the doctor will dilate (open) your cervix slightly and will insert a sterile cannula into your uterus. Next, there will be a gentle suction while your uterus is emptied. You will then be taken to the recovery room. This abortion procedure takes just 5 to 8 minutes, and is considered to be one of the safest surgical procedures done today.
